Eat Seasonably

Eat Seasonably

These days you can get pretty much and fruit or vegetable at most grocery stores any time of the year. But, of course, that’s not the way it was just 100 years ago much less 100,000 years ago. We ate what was in season, what was ripe and ready to eat. With a little research [...]

Fried Plantains with Guacamole

Fried Plantains with Guacamole

While on our trip to Pros Ranch Market I also picked up some plantains. I’ve since learned that plantains aren’t the ideal primal food – they have lots of carbs, similar to a sweet potato -  but they have a glycemic index of 38 (same as an apple) so not totally terrible.
Anyway I’ve been craving [...]

Keftedes (greek meatballs) Primal Style video

Keftedes (greek meatballs) Primal Style video

One of the first recipes I adapted to the Caveman Diet was keftedes. They’re Greek meatballs and they’re fantastic! I did it for one of Mark Sisson’s primal contests this last summer. I had to make a few changes to traditional keftedes recipes and it seems I wasn’t able to please anyone with it. Those [...]

Nopales con Huevos (cactus with eggs)

Nopales con Huevos (cactus with eggs)

Recently I took the cavefamily to Pros Ranch Market, a great local Mexican grocery store where I got a cactus leaf. Or “nopales” as I’ve since learned they’re called. I found these cactus leafs in the store and even though I had no idea what to do with them I bought one and then used [...]

Primal Shopping – Pros Ranch Market

Primal Shopping – Pros Ranch Market

We went shopping recently at a very interesting place: Pros Ranch Market. I was told about the place by a former coworker and finally got around to going. He described it as a Mexican Wal-Mart and I think that’s pretty accurate. They had tons of incredibly inexpensive produce and lots of stuff you can’t get [...]

The break

So we went on a long trip and moved and I’m in the process of exiting active-duty Air Force service so I haven’t been posting anything. That will change. Now that we’re settled into the new cave and the Cavebrother has joined us we’re getting ready to get all healthy again. Expect new recipes, weekly [...]

Andouille sausage stuffed zucchini boats

Andouille sausage stuffed zucchini boats

Last night I made something primal that even the cavekids liked. So far in my primal journey this is rare. Unless I make bacon of course. Everyone likes bacon.
There are tons of recipes out there for zucchini boats. It’s a relatively simple concept: scoop out innards of zucchini. Put delicious stuff where the zucchini innards [...]

You’re gonna have a B.L.A.S.T. salad!

You’re gonna have a B.L.A.S.T. salad!

This is probably the recipe I’ve been looking forward to making the most out of the big old stack of recipes on the drawing board. First of all, it’s called BLAST… which means it blasts off in your mouth to taste sensations you’ve never experienced… ever. Yeah.

Eating out: adventures in primal eating on the town – Elephant Bar Restaurant

Eating out: adventures in primal eating on the town – Elephant Bar Restaurant

Four years ago today my lovely cavewoman and I tied the knot and made a cave of our own. To celebrate we decided to go out to eat at the Elephant Bar Restaurant with the cavekids in tow.

Pomegranate lemon salad dressing

Pomegranate lemon salad dressing

Tonight the cavefamily and I went shopping and I picked up a bunch of neato ingredients for a few of the recipes I’ll be posting here. It took a bit too long and by the time we got home there wasn’t time to make the stuffed Moroccan tomatoes or the B.L.A.S.T. salad. So I made some dressing for my salad tomorrow. Actually there’s probably enough for about three or four salads. :)
